In its 2020 Strategy, the PGE CG committed to increasing the waste recirculation rate to over 65% and reducing the volume of landfilled waste to 10% by 2035. These targets are voluntary and are to be achieved through:
- aligning processes and assets with circular economy principles;
- ensuring a sustainable supply chain for raw materials and resources;
- reducing energy losses and material waste;
- rehabilitating and restoring post-industrial sites for future investment purposes.
The targets are consistent with the directions set out in the Environmental Policy, particularly in terms of minimising environmental impact by reducing the amount of waste generated and promoting its efficient use.
This goal is relative in nature, meaning it apply to the PGE CG as a whole and is not required to be met by individual entities (e.g. due to the specific nature of waste generated). It may also be revised in response to changing market or regulatory conditions.
In defining these targets, the company considered the influence and needs of both internal and external stakeholders, as well as the available resources and technological capabilities for waste recovery. At the date of the report, the Company is in the process of updating its Strategy, including strategic goals and target indicator values, which will therefore be subject to change.
The goals are not benchmarked against a base year. The aim to raise the recirculation rate to >65% and limit waste land-filling to a maximum of 10% refers to levels intended to be reached by 2035, as a result of the actions described in section E5-2.
In addition to ongoing monitoring of policy effectiveness and related activities – carried out through audits and inspections under implemented environmental management systems – no dedicated system has yet been introduced to monitor or control progress towards these specific recirculation- and land-filling-related targets, or to allow response to potential deviations or risks. Due to the planned update of the PGE CG Strategy, a description of the monitoring process for new targets will be provided in the next Statement. Within the PGE CG, the volume of waste generated is directly linked to electricity and heat production demand and to the operating capacity of generation units. In such conditions, setting interim targets for waste reduction is difficult. Hence efforts within the Group focus on minimising the environmental impact of waste through appropriate management methods.
